Kesä tulee jättiaskelin / Summer is coming with giant leaps

Viimeisen viikon aikana kevät on ottanut jättiaskelia kohti kesää. Koivikot ovat saaneet uskomattoman kauniin heleänvihreän lehvästön. - During the last week the spring has taken giant leaps towards summer. The birch trees have got incredibly beautiful bright green leaves.

Lumi ja jää ovat poissa! / No more snow and ice!

Vielä kaksi viikkoa sitten Metsälampi oli suurelta osin jään peitossa, mutta nyt jää on sulanut. Telkät ilmestyivät lammelle heti, kun sulaa oli sen verran että uimaan mahtuivat.

Only two weeks ago the Forest Pond was mostly covered with ice, but now it's totally free of ice. The goldeneyes appeared to the pond as soon as there was enough free water for them to swim.



Myös Aulangonjärvi on jo jäistä vapaa. Metsän haavat ovat vielä lehdettömiä.

Also the nearby lake is free of ice. The aspen trees in the forest are still without leaves.


Sammalpohjainen metsä näyttää jo aivan vihreältä. Sinivuokkojen seuraksi ilmestyivät viime viikolla myös valkovuokot.

The moss covered forest ground looks quite geen already. A week after the hepaticas also the wood anemones opened their flowers.

Kevät on tullut! / The Spring is here!

Olin pari viikkoa matkoilla, ja sillä välin oli kevät ottanut aimo harppauksen eteenpäin. Lumet ovat kutakuinkin sulaneet viime viikon aikana, ja kukat ovat tulleet esiin. Metsässä sinivuokot ovat joka vuosi samanlainen ihme: viimevuotisten kuivien lehtien peittämästä maasta ne puhkeavat esiin kukkimaan tuolla uskomattomalla sinisellä värillään. Nyt ovat minun metsäni reunassa vasta ensimmäiset vuokot, mutta ensi viikolla koko rinne on varmasti sinisenään niitä.

I was away from home for a couple of weeks, and meanwhile the spring had taken a giant leap forward. The snow has almost melted, and flowers have appeared. In the forest, the hepaticas (anemone hepatica) are a miracle every year: from the ground, which is covered with last year's dry leaves, they appear, blooming with that unbelievably blue colour. In my forest, only the first hepaticas are blooming now, but I'm sure that next week the whole slope will be blue with flowers.

Koko talven lumen alla nukkunut metsämaa tulee taas esiin. Muurahaiset ovat nukkuneet talven kekonsa uumenissa, mutta nyt ne ovat taas liikkeellä kunnostaen ahkerasti pesäänsä.

The forest ground has slept all winter under the snow, but now it is bare again. The ants have slept the winter in the depths of their hill, but now they are on the move again, busy trimming their home.


Ihan kaikki lumi ei täältä ole vielä sulanut, sillä syvemmällä metsässä, varjoisemmissa ja pohjoisenpuoleisissa paikoissa on vielä lunta jäljellä. Mutta luvassa on lämmintä säätä lähipäiviksi, joten eiköhän loppukin talvi sen myötä saa kyytiä.

All the snow has not yet melted, and deeper in the forest, on the slopes facing North, there is still some snow left. But the weather forecast promises warm days for the coming weekend, so I think the remains of the winter will disappear soon.

Kevät on myöhässä tänä vuonna / The spring is late this year

Viime sunnuntaina kävin metsässä ensimmäistä kertaa pitkään aikaan (varvasleikkaus on estänyt kengän saamisen jalkaan), ja sepä tuntui mukavalta. Mutta kevät taitaa olla tänä vuonna vähän myöhässä, lunta ja pakkasia on riittänyt aina vain. Metsässäkin on vielä paksu hanki, mutta puiden lumikuormat ovat toki hävinneet. Ja viime yönähän satoi vielä paksulti uutta lunta, mutta onneksi aurinko paistaa jo todella voimallisesti päivisin.

Last Sunday I went to the forest for the first time since the beginning of February (I had a toe operation and so I couldn't wear a shoe since last week), and it felt so wonderfful. But it seems that the spring is a bit late this year, and we've had snow and freezing temperatures all the time. In the forest there's still a thick cover of snow on the ground, but the snow loads have disappeared from the trees. Last night we did get a lot of new snow, but fortunately the sun is shining really warm during the day time.

Etelään päin olevilla paikoilla aurinko on jo sulattanut pälviä lumeen, ja sieltähän paljastuu esimerkiksi puolukanvarsia. Ne muistuttavat viime kesästä ja antavat toivoa uuden kesän tulemisesta. Paksujen lumikinosten alla kasvien on ollut hyvä talvehtia.

On the spots that face to the south, the sun has melted holes in the snow cover. And there they are, lingonberry stalks with their green leaves. The thick snow has protected them during the winter, and now they remind me of the last summer and give hope that the new summer will come soon.

Kevätpäiväntasaus! / Spring Equinox!

Tänään on kevätpäiväntasauspäivä - ja lunta on vieläkin joka paikassa. Itse asiassa sitä satoi vielä toissapäivänä kymmenen senttiä lisää. Nämä metsäkuvat on otettu viime viikolla, kun kompuroin paketissa olevalla jalallani metsän reunaan katsomaan, miltä siellä näyttää. Lunta siis on edelleen, mutta aurinko on kyllä sulattanut sen pintaa niin monena päivänä, niin että hangen pinnalla on jo kova kuori. Ja kaikenlaista roskaa on pudonnut puista lumelle, tuulen pudottamana kai enimmäkseen. Pienimmät kuuset, jotka keskitalvella olivat lumen peitossa, alkavat tulla näkyviin, kun kinokset vajuvat.

Today is the Equinox day - and we still have snow everywhere. In fact we got more snow two days ago, about 10 centimetres (4 inches). I took these images last week when I went to the edge of the forest (I couldn't get further because my foot is still sore after the operation I had last month). There is still a lot of snow, but the sun has melted the surface of the snow so that there is a hard crust on it now. There's also a lot of rubbish on the snow - I think the wind has blown it off from the trees. The smallest spruce trees, which were covered with snow in mid-winter, are starting to appear as the snow gets lower.

Talvi jatkuu / Winter continues

Talvi vain jatkuu. Lunta on todella paljon, ja pakkasta riittää. Vimeisten kahden viikon ajan pakkasta on ollut joka päivä ainakin aamuisin yli 20 astetta. Tämä kuva on otettu tänä aamuna takapihaltani. Paljon takapihaa kauemmaksi en nyt pääsekään kulkemaan, sillä olin kaksi viikkoa sitten jalkaleikkauksessa ja siitä toipuminen kestää tuonne maaliskuun lopulle. Nyt on siis "Metsäpäiväkirjassa" jonkin aikaa pakollista taukoa, mutta yritän ottaa kuvia ainakin pihaltani ja lähiympäristöstä.

The winter continues. There's really a lot of snow, and it's really cold. For the last two weeks the temperatures have dropped below -20 degrees Celcius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) every day, at least in the mornings. I took this image from my backyard this morning. Backyard is just about as far as I can go now, because my foot was operated two weeks ago, and recovering from it will last until the end of March. So there's going to be a mandatory pause in this "Forest Diary" for some time, but I will try to take pictures at least from my backyard and the near surroundings.

Lunta, pelkkää lunta... / Snow, nothing but snow

Eipä ole juuri uutta kerrottavaa teille, kaunis luminen taikatalvi jatkuu.
I don't really have much new to tell you. The beautiful snowy enchanted winter continues.

Metsässä on tosi hiljaista. Lumi vaientaa kaikki äänet.
It's really quiet in the forest, the snow silences all the noises.

Oli hieman raskasta kulkea polviin asti ulottuvassa umpihangessa - mutta samalla niin virkistävää.
It was pretty hard to walk in the knee-high unbeaten snow, but it was so also so refreshing.
