Kevätpäiväntasaus - talvi jatkuu yhä / Spring Equinox - and the winter continues

Tänään on kevätpäiväntasauksen päivä, mutta kovin keväiseltä ei luonnossa vielä näytä, vaikka aurinko paistaakin. Valo on toki lisääntynyt, mutta lämpötilat ovat edelleen pakkasen puolella yötä päivää eikä lumi ole juurikaan alkanut vielä sulaa. Tämä onkin lehtitietojen mukaan kylmin maaliskuu 50:een vuoteen.

Today is the day of Spring Equinox, but it doesn't look very much like spring in the nature. We still have freezing temperatures day and night - this is the coldest March in 50 years in Finland.

Lumi hallitsee metsässä edelleen. Tässä ovat puut taipuneet kaariporteiksi polun ylle useamman runsaslumisen talven seurauksena.

Snow still reigns in the forest. Several winters in row with a lot of snow have bent the trees to form arch gates over the path in the forest.

Mutta kyllä aurinko jo paikoitellen on osoittanut voimansa ja sulattanut lunta hieman. Tässä on kaatuneen puun rungolle muodostunut hauskoja hahmoja lumitaakan sulaessa.

But on some spots the sun has already shown its power and melted the snow a bit. Here are some funny figures which have been formed on a fallen tree trunk by the snow melting.

Tässä yksi Aulangon Metsälammen rannalla olevista piknikpöydistä. Ihan vielä ei pääse eväsretkelle...

Kolmas perättäinen lumitalvi / Third snowy winter in row

Menossa on kolmas perättäinen runsasluminen talvi. Metsässä liikkuminen (ilman suksia) on hieman haasteelista mutta palkitsee kyllä kauniilla näkymillä. Ylläoleva kuva on otettu eilen, harmaana päivänä, Aulangon Näkötorninvuoren tasanteelta. Pakkasta oli ehkä asteen verran, pilvet matalalla.

This winter is third in row with a lot of snow. It makes moving around in the forest a little bit challenging (unless you can ski), but it's rewarding because the sights are beautiful. The image above was taken yesterday, in the Aulanko nature preservation area. The day was gray, the clouds were hanging low, temperature just below zero degrees C.

Jouluaatto 2011 / Christmas Eve 2011

Jouluaatto 2011 Aulangon Joutsenlammella. Lämpötila +4 astetta ja vettä sataa, mutta on lampi sentään jäässä. Tänä jouluna ei siis lunta.

Christmas Eve 2011 at the Aulanko Swan Pond. The temperature is +4 degres Celsius and it's raining, but at least there's ice on the pond. No snow this Christmas.

Loppukesän näkymiä / Sights of late summer

Kärpässienten punaiset lakit ovat aina niin hauskan näköisiä. Ne ovat oikeastaan edessä olevan syksyn väriloiston ensimmäinen ennakoija.
The red caps of Amanitas always look so pretty. In fact, they are the first anticipators of the colour abundance of the coming autumn.

Komea herkkutatti on aina yhtä sykähdyttävä näky.
A stately Boletus edulis is always a strikig sight.

Sumuisena aamuna hämähäkinseitit erottuvat selkeästi.
On a foggy morning the spider's web are clearly visible.

Sananjalanlehti on jo alkanut saada ruskaväritystä.
A fern leaf has started to turn into autumn colours.

Sienikausi alkaa! / The mushroom season begins!

Yksi kesän parhaista kausista on alkamassa: sienet puskevat esiin metsämaasta! Metsässä vaeltelu sieniä etsimässä ja poimimassa on melkein hauskinta puuhaa minkä tiedän. Ja onhan se myös hyödyllistä: saan koriini sekä päivällistarpeet että sieniä lankojen värjäämiseen.

One of the best seasons of the summer is beginning: the mushrooms are popping up from the ground. Wandering in the forest looking for mushrooms is maybe the most fun and exciting activity I know. And it's also very useful: I get the ingredients for my supper and also mushrooms with which I can dye my yarns.


Kesä on taas kerran livahtanut pitkälle ilman, että olen ollenkaan tajunnut mihin aika on kulunut. Tässä kuvassa on pieni takautuma alkukesään: juhannusyö Aulangolla.

Kesä tulee jättiaskelin / Summer is coming with giant leaps

Viimeisen viikon aikana kevät on ottanut jättiaskelia kohti kesää. Koivikot ovat saaneet uskomattoman kauniin heleänvihreän lehvästön. - During the last week the spring has taken giant leaps towards summer. The birch trees have got incredibly beautiful bright green leaves.

Vihreät lehdet heijastuvat Joutsenlammen pintaan.
The Swan Pond reflects the new green leaves.

Lehtimetsien niityt ovat valkovuokkojen peitossa.
The meadows in the leafy woods are covered with wood anemones.

Puut kasvattavat uusia vauvalehtiä: kuusenkerkkiä ja koivunlehtiä...
All trees are growing baby leaves: spruce needles and birch leaves...

Pihlajan ja haavan lehtiä...
Rowan leaves and aspen leaves...

Tammen ja lepän lehtiä.
Oak leaves and alder leaves.
