Kevätpäiväntasaus - talvi jatkuu yhä / Spring Equinox - and the winter continues

Tänään on kevätpäiväntasauksen päivä, mutta kovin keväiseltä ei luonnossa vielä näytä, vaikka aurinko paistaakin. Valo on toki lisääntynyt, mutta lämpötilat ovat edelleen pakkasen puolella yötä päivää eikä lumi ole juurikaan alkanut vielä sulaa. Tämä onkin lehtitietojen mukaan kylmin maaliskuu 50:een vuoteen.

Today is the day of Spring Equinox, but it doesn't look very much like spring in the nature. We still have freezing temperatures day and night - this is the coldest March in 50 years in Finland.

Lumi hallitsee metsässä edelleen. Tässä ovat puut taipuneet kaariporteiksi polun ylle useamman runsaslumisen talven seurauksena.

Snow still reigns in the forest. Several winters in row with a lot of snow have bent the trees to form arch gates over the path in the forest.

Mutta kyllä aurinko jo paikoitellen on osoittanut voimansa ja sulattanut lunta hieman. Tässä on kaatuneen puun rungolle muodostunut hauskoja hahmoja lumitaakan sulaessa.

But on some spots the sun has already shown its power and melted the snow a bit. Here are some funny figures which have been formed on a fallen tree trunk by the snow melting.

Kolmas perättäinen lumitalvi / Third snowy winter in row

Menossa on kolmas perättäinen runsasluminen talvi. Metsässä liikkuminen (ilman suksia) on hieman haasteelista mutta palkitsee kyllä kauniilla näkymillä. Ylläoleva kuva on otettu eilen, harmaana päivänä, Aulangon Näkötorninvuoren tasanteelta. Pakkasta oli ehkä asteen verran, pilvet matalalla.

This winter is third in row with a lot of snow. It makes moving around in the forest a little bit challenging (unless you can ski), but it's rewarding because the sights are beautiful. The image above was taken yesterday, in the Aulanko nature preservation area. The day was gray, the clouds were hanging low, temperature just below zero degrees C.

Harmaa päivä / A grey day

Tänään oli pilvinen päivä, taivas ja maa samanväriset. Pakkanen oli lauhtunut, sitä oli enää kuusi astetta.
Today was a cloudy day. The sky and the earth had the same colour. It was not as cold as yesterday, only -6 degrees Celcius.


Lunta, lunta, lunta...
Snow, snow, snow...


Lumi on tehnyt monista lehtipuiden oksistoista aivan ihanan pitsimäisiä.
The snow has turned many trees into beautiful lace. These trees dropped their leaves in the autumn, and will be green again next summer. Just wait, and I'll show you!


Vielä tänään oli puissa runsaasti lunta, mutta koska illalla alkoi tuulla aika kovaa, voi olla että lumet ovat aamulla pudonneet oksilta.
Today there was still very much snow in the trees, but as the wind started to blow quite hard in the evening, it may be that tomorrow the snow has fallen from the branches.

Keskitalven aurinko / Midwinter sun

Tämän päivän ilmiö oli aurinko. Pakkasta oli kymmenisen astetta ja aurinko pääsi pilkistämään pilvipeitteen raosta.
Today's phenomenon was the sun. The temperature was minus 10 degrees Celcius, and the sun could peek from an opening in the clouds.


Aulangon Metsälampi nukkuu paksun jää- ja lumipeitteen alla.
The Forest Pond in the Aulanko nature conservation park sleeps under a thick cover of ice and snow.


Aulangonvuorelta, näkötornin tasanteelta aukeaa kansallismaisema - tässä vaihteeksi talviasussaan. Keskellä näkyy Lusikkaniemi ja sen kärjessä pari hiihtäjää Aulangonjärveä kiertävällä ladulla.
From the Aulanko mountain you can see this landscape, which has been nominated as a "National treasure landscape". In the middle is the "Spoon cape", and near the head of the cape you can see two people skiing on the track, which runs on the ice around the Aulanko lake.



Toinen kuvakulma Aulangonvuorelta huurteiseen maisemaan. Keskellä olevassa metsässä on kuusten seassa haapoja, jotka näyttävät huurteisina aivan hattaroilta.

Uusi vuosi 2011 alkoi lumisena / The new year 2011 started with lots of snow

Toinen luminen talvi peräkkäin. Myös täällä Etelä-Suomessa, Hämeenlinnassa Aulangon metsässä on lunta taas riittämiin. Metsässä sitä on maassa parikymmentä senttiä, ja puiden oksille on ehtinyt kertyä jo aika mahtavat kuorrutukset. Metsässä täytyy nyt jalan liikkua pikkupoluilla ("koiranpoluilla"), sillä valaistu ulkoilureitti on varattu hiihtäjille. Koiranpolkuja on onneksi paljon, ja kyllä välillä voi kahlata ihan umpihangessakin - seurata vaikka jäniksenjälkiä. Hiljaisuus metsässä on rauhoittavaa.
We are having a second snowy winter running. Even here in Southern Finland, in the Aulanko nature conservation forest, there is a lot of snow. In the forest the snow is about 20 cm deep, and the trees are heavily coated with snow. There are a lot of small paths running all around the forest, and sometimes it's even fun to walk in deep snow or just follow some hare's tracks. The silence in the forest is really soothing.


Viime talven tykkylumet taivuttivat suuren määrän puita luokille, eivätkä ne enää siitä oienneet. Niinpä metsässä näkee edelleenkin tällaisia taipuneitten puitten muodostamia holvikäytäviä, joiden päälle on jo asttunut tämänvuotinen lumi. Osa puista katkesikin viime talven lumien alla, kuten tuo polun ylle kaatunut kuusi.
Last winter the heavy snow loads bent a lot of trees down, and they did not straighten up any more. Now you can see in the forest tunnels formed by the bent trees. Some of the trees even broke under the snow last winter, as this spruce here.
